Your Agent Never Puts You on Hold

On a live call, your agent can take on real research without leaving you in silence. It tells you it's on it, keeps talking, and folds the answer back into the conversation when it's ready.

by The Agency

Most mornings I call my agent before I've finished my first coffee. Not to do anything in particular, just to get the shape of the day: what's on, what moved, what I forgot I'd agreed to.

A while back I wrote about what these calls feel like. The short version is that you tap the phone icon, your agent picks up, and you talk. It can check your calendar, send an email, or look something up while the line is open, all without breaking the conversation.

Those quick things always worked well. It was the slower things that were awkward.

If I asked for something that took real work, like properly looking into a company or digging through a thread or pulling a few sources together, the line would just go quiet while it worked. Ten seconds. Sometimes a minute. Nothing was broken, it was doing exactly what I'd asked. But a silent phone line feels much longer than a silent chat window, so in practice I stopped asking. I saved the real questions for later and kept the call to quick stuff.

That's the part that changed.

Here's the kind of call I mean

Picture a normal morning call, your agent running through the day.

"Morning. What's my day look like?"

"Morning. You've got the design review at 9:30, lunch with Priya moved to Thursday, and a 2 o'clock with a company called Kestrel that you agreed to a few weeks ago."

"Kestrel. I don't remember who they are anymore. Can you look into them before the call?"

"On it. I'll put something together while we keep going."

It carries on with the rest of the brief: an invoice that came in overnight, a couple of emails worth reading, a thing you asked it to hold onto on Friday. A minute later, in the middle of a sentence, it comes back:

"Those notes on Kestrel are ready, by the way. Quick version: they make scheduling software for trades, about sixty people in Manchester, and they shipped an AI dispatch feature last month. You're meeting Marcus, their head of partnerships. Priya introduced you back in June, and his last note hinted at working together rather than going it alone, so it's more of a partnership chat than a pitch. The full brief's in your reports."

You never stopped talking. It never made you wait. And the thing you actually needed was ready by the time you needed it.

The brief it leaves looks like this:

Sample report

Kestrel: quick brief for your 2:00

What they do. Kestrel builds scheduling software for home-services companies (plumbers, electricians, HVAC crews). Around sixty people, based in Manchester, raised a Series A last year.

How this meeting happened. Priya introduced you on June 28, after Kestrel shipped a new AI dispatching feature. You agreed to a call, and it landed on today at 2:00.

Who you're meeting. Marcus Bell, their Head of Partnerships. He joined eight months ago and set up this call himself.

What he's likely after. His last note hinted at working together rather than going it alone. Worth having a view on what that could look like before you're on the line.

Worth knowing. They've been hiring fast since the new feature launched. A couple of their recent job posts mention "agent workflows," so automation is clearly on their mind.

Two things at once: the gist out loud, and the full brief saved to read before the meeting.

What actually changed

Before, "look into them for me" on a call meant sitting in silence while it worked. Now it takes the job, tells you once that it's on it, and keeps the conversation going. When the answer is ready, it brings it back into the call at a natural pause and carries on from wherever you've got to.

It holds the floor instead of putting you on hold.

The quick things still happen mid-sentence, the way they always did. The difference is that the slower, more useful things no longer cost you the conversation.

You can watch it work

While you talk, there's a live view of whatever your agent has going in the background: what it's working on, how long it's been at it, and a way to open the finished result the moment it's done. So the work happens somewhere you can both hear it and see it. You get the answer out loud when it's ready, and you can watch it come together in the meantime if you want to.

The call comes along with you, too. Start it on one screen, move to another, and it stays live in a small pill at the top with a timer and a way to hang up. Tap that and you're back to the full view, where a soft sphere sits at the center and moves with the sound in the room.

Why it feels right

The hard part of this was never the research. It was the timing.

An answer that lands the instant it's ready, right on top of whatever you happen to be saying, is worse than no answer at all. So your agent waits for a real pause. It won't talk over you, it won't cut off its own sentence, and if you jump back in it holds the result until there's room. It also tells you it's on something only once, then lets it go, rather than reminding you every few seconds that it's still thinking.

And when the answer does come back, it doesn't derail. It doesn't forget what you were in the middle of. It drops the finding in, a sentence or two, and picks the conversation back up where you left it.

Pick up the phone and ask it something real

When we first gave your agent a voice, the idea was that it should feel less like using a tool and more like calling a very capable friend. This is the piece of that promise that was still missing. A friend you call doesn't go silent on you while they check something. They say "hang on, let me look," keep chatting, and tell you what they found.

Now your agent does the same. Tap the phone icon and ask it something that takes real work. It won't leave you holding the line.
